Spoiler alert: it's not based on one single thing.
Budgeting and planning for a home remodeling project can be intimidating. It can feel like shooting at a target that has not even been put up. Trying to guess the cost of materials and labor in an unfamiliar trade is frustrating.
When it comes to pricing gutters, there are many factors to consider.
The first is the cost of materials. Usually, gutter installers will charge a price per foot for materials based on the total cost of materials used. Standard K-style gutters are made of aluminum. Typically, aluminum prices don't fluctuate quickly enough to cause major changes in the material cost to the consumer on a daily basis.
Commercial-grade gutters (box gutters) are usually made of thicker aluminum or steel, which costs more per linear foot.
Additionally, gutters made from true copper cost significantly more than any traditional metal gutters. Copper gutters can cost anywhere from $15 - $40 per linear foot installed.
If you want to install half-round gutters instead of K-style, the installation process is different; therefore, the cost will be different. Box downspouts will be a different cost than round downspouts and 3x4 downspouts.
At Edge Gutters, we determine how much material we will need based on your home's eaves and the height of your downspouts. Instead of using the square footage of a home or a rough guess, we estimate each home's needs individually, starting with the size.
In some cases, what may seem like a smaller home may actually cost more to put gutters on if there are more eaves than a taller, seemingly bigger home.
A taller home may not have much gutter footage, but it may have longer downspouts, which contributes to the overall cost. Things like extra miters, longer-than-normal downspout extensions, or extra elbows may add to the cost of your installation.
Sometimes gutter companies will lower the cost of certain types of work if other work is also being done. For example, if a gutter company is installing gutter guards in addition to a full gutter system, they may charge less for the gutter guards than if they were installing only gutter guards.
The cost may also change if work is needed on the soffit and fascia, or if you want the installers to add splash blocks or corrugated piping.
Some installers will charge for each corner cut (miter). Some will charge separately for taking away your old gutters.
Edge Gutters' cost includes corner cuts that are custom to your house and any tear-off and haul-away of old gutters.
There are sometimes unique situations that require exceptions to gutter pricing. Sometimes this means the homeowner wants to replace only the gutters and leave the downspouts. It could also be that the gutter installer might charge more if there is landscaping that is difficult to navigate.
This might be an extremely hard-to-reach area that requires more equipment, although this situation is rare.
Some companies will charge extra for driving beyond a pre-determined distance from their office or main site. Again, this is a rare situation.
At Edge Gutters, the cost we give you is the cost we will charge. We will not come back later and charge you more. We take our time and tailor each quote to each individual situation.
Ultimately, the reason that we can't just give you a price off the cuff is that we approach each situation very intentionally. Edge Gutters wants to ensure that you have a customized experience with us, and a custom experience includes custom pricing.
